Shampoo for dry, curly and fine hair from MONDAY Haircare

Three ranges by hair type in 354 ml pump bottles with a soft gardenia scent, plus a 50 ml Smooth to try first.

Shampoo from MONDAY Haircare comes in three ranges, one for each hair type: Moisture for dry and dull hair, Smooth for curly, wavy or frizz-prone hair, and Volume for fine hair that falls flat. In Vietnam your scalp sweats under a helmet all day while the ends dry out in the sun. The same head of hair can be greasy at the roots and dry at the tips.

MONDAY is a New Zealand brand, made in China, and All Asia Connect is its official importer. The full line-up is on our MONDAY Haircare page.

Choosing a shampoo by hair type and scalp

Look at your hair once it has dried naturally, then at your roots at the end of the day.

  • Dry, dull, rough at the ends: Moisture, for normal to dry hair, with hyaluronic acid and shea butter.
  • Curly, wavy, or puffs up when the air is humid: Smooth, with wheat protein and avocado oil.
  • Fine, thin, lies flat against the scalp: Volume, with hydrolysed collagen and macadamia oil.
  • Roots go greasy under a helmet: choose by the hair itself and adjust how you wash. No MONDAY range is labelled for oily scalps.
  • Coloured or keratin-treated hair: see the questions below.

If you are unsure of your hair type, tap the Hair Finder button on this page for a suggestion.

How Moisture, Smooth and Volume differ

Moisture is for normal to dry, dull hair. Hyaluronic acid helps hold moisture in the strand, and shea butter helps seal the cuticle and soften the hair. Pick it when your ends feel dry and dull.

Smooth is for curly, wavy, frizzy or hard-to-manage hair. Wheat protein locks in moisture and helps keep frizz down, while avocado oil nourishes and softens. Pick it when your hair puffs up after an afternoon downpour in Saigon or in a damp Hanoi spring.

Volume is for fine, thin hair that goes flat. Hydrolysed collagen helps strands feel fuller, and macadamia oil adds light moisture. Pick it when your hair sticks to your scalp a few hours after washing.

The 50 ml Smooth travel size fits in a handbag. It gives you a few washes to test before the big bottle.

Coconut oil is in the three conditioners, not in the shampoos, according to the ingredient lists on the MONDAY site.

Washing in the heat and humidity of Vietnam

Half an hour on a motorbike at midday and your scalp is wet with sweat under the helmet. By the time you get home the roots are flat and smell of the helmet lining, yet the ends are still dry. The scalp is the part that needs the real wash.

Work the shampoo into wet hair and scalp, then massage with your fingertips for one to two minutes and rinse well. The lather running down the lengths as you rinse is enough for the ends.

After a day of road dust, the first wash may hardly foam. Rinse, then wash a second time with a smaller amount.

Let your hair dry fully before you put the helmet back on. A helmet over wet hair keeps the scalp damp for longer.

What is in the bottle, and what is not

MONDAY leaves out SLS, SLES and parabens, according to the brand and to the packaging sold in Vietnam. It uses milder cleansers instead, such as sodium cocoyl isethionate and coconut-derived sodium olefin sulfonate. The pH of the shampoos and conditioners is 5.

Moisture and Smooth shampoo contain dimethicone, a silicone. If you are avoiding silicones, Volume is the shampoo without dimethicone in its ingredient list.

The scent is a light gardenia, the same across all three ranges. MONDAY is certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny and recognised by PETA, and the bottles are recyclable HDPE.

The matching conditioner

Each range has a conditioner of the same name, used straight after the shampoo. The shampoo takes care of the scalp, the conditioner takes care of the lengths and ends. How to apply it, how long to leave it and which one to pick are on the MONDAY conditioner page.

With fine hair, use a little conditioner on the ends only so the roots keep their lift.

Frequently asked questions

Is MONDAY a sulfate-free shampoo?

Yes, in the sense that it contains no SLS or SLES, the harsh sulfates most people avoid. The packaging says it is made without harsh sulfates and parabens. The list does include milder cleansers with similar names, such as disodium laureth sulfosuccinate and sodium olefin sulfonate.

Can I use MONDAY shampoo on coloured hair?

Yes. MONDAY says it has had very good feedback from people with colour-treated hair. Moisture, Smooth and Volume do not claim colour protection on the bottle, though. If you have just had your hair coloured, ask your stylist how long to wait before the first wash.

Can I use it after a keratin treatment?

Yes. MONDAY has tested its formulas with many keratin treatments and found them safe to use together. The brand still suggests checking with the salon that did your hair, because every salon uses different keratin products. For chemical straightening or perms the brand gives no specific advice.

How often should I wash my hair in hot weather?

There is no single number, and MONDAY does not give one either. Hair care guides in Vietnam often suggest two to three times a week, or every other day, for people who wear a helmet a lot. Wash when the roots feel greasy, and condition the ends if your hair is dry.

Which range should I use for oily hair?

MONDAY has no range labelled for oily hair, so choose by the hair itself. Fine hair that goes flat suits Volume, dry ends suit Moisture. Concentrate the shampoo on the scalp, massage it in well, and keep conditioner from the mid-lengths down so the roots stay fresh for longer.

Can my child use my MONDAY shampoo?

Better not. MONDAY does not test its products on children or babies, so it cannot recommend them for little ones. It suggests products made for young children instead. The MONDAY bottles in your bathroom are for the adults in the house.

Can I use MONDAY shampoo during pregnancy?

Check with your doctor first. That is also what MONDAY advises for any cosmetic or hair care product during pregnancy. The full ingredient list is on the MONDAY website, so you can show it to your doctor at your next antenatal check-up.

How long does an opened bottle last?

Twelve months after opening, according to MONDAY. An unopened bottle keeps for 3 years from manufacture. The packaging says to store it somewhere dry and cool, away from sunlight and humidity. Keep it off a sunny windowsill and away from the hot water heater.

Start with the 50 ml bottle if you are unsure

For curly or frizz-prone hair, order the 50 ml Smooth and try it for a few washes. For dry or fine hair, go straight for the 354 ml Moisture or Volume with the matching conditioner.
