Conditioner from MONDAY Haircare for softer, less tangled hair

Apply from mid-lengths to ends, leave it for one to two minutes, rinse. Three ranges by hair type, named like the shampoos.

Conditioner from MONDAY Haircare goes on after the shampoo, on the lengths and ends where hair is driest and tangles most. There are three ranges: Moisture hydrates dry hair, Smooth helps curly hair frizz and tangle less, and Volume conditions fine hair lightly. In Vietnam the hard part is keeping the ends soft in humid air without the roots going limp.

Each range comes in a 354 ml pump bottle, and Smooth also comes in 50 ml. More about the brand and the full range is on the MONDAY Haircare page.

What the rinse after shampoo does

Shampoo cleans the scalp. Afterwards the ends are often dry and easy to tangle, especially in long, curly or coloured hair. Conditioner coats the lengths so each strand feels softer and slips more easily through a comb.

That is why it does not go on the scalp. The directions on the MONDAY bottle are clear: from mid-length to ends, avoiding the scalp.

Choosing a conditioner by dryness, curl and thickness

Moisture is for normal to dry, dull hair. Hyaluronic acid holds moisture, shea butter helps seal the cuticle and soften, and coconut oil hydrates and adds shine. Pick it when your ends feel dry and drag under the comb.

Smooth is for curly, wavy and frizz-prone hair. Wheat protein locks in moisture and helps reduce tangles, avocado oil softens, coconut oil adds shine. Pick it when long hair knots after every wash or puffs up whenever the air turns humid.

Volume is for fine, thin hair that falls flat. Hydrolysed collagen helps strands feel fuller, and macadamia oil gives light moisture. Pick it when you want soft hair but worry that conditioner will glue it to your scalp.

The 50 ml Smooth is the travel size. Pack it for a weekend at the beach so you are not stuck with the hotel conditioner.

The three ranges side by side

RangeSuitsKey ingredients in the conditionerWhat the brand aims for
MoistureNormal to dry, dull hairHyaluronic acid, shea butter, coconut oilHydration, soft and shiny hair
SmoothCurly, wavy, frizz-prone hairWheat protein, avocado oil, coconut oilSmooth, soft hair with less frizz and fewer tangles
VolumeFine, thin, flat hairHydrolysed collagen, macadamia oil, shea butter, coconut oilLight conditioning, hair that feels fuller

All three contain dimethicone and dimethiconol, both silicones, in their ingredient lists. They are free of SLS, SLES and parabens, with a pH of 5.

Mid-lengths to ends: how to apply it

  • Rinse out the shampoo, then gently squeeze the water from your hair. On dripping-wet hair the conditioner thins out and runs off before it can coat the strands.
  • Take a small amount, and one more pump for long hair. Smooth it from the mid-lengths down to the ends, keeping it off the roots and scalp.
  • Leave it for one to two minutes. While you wait, work through the knots with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends.
  • Rinse until the slippery feeling has gone. Pat your hair with a towel instead of rubbing it.

Keep it out of your eyes. For short, fine hair, a single pump is often enough for the whole head.

When humid air makes hair frizz

In Saigon an afternoon downpour can puff up freshly dried hair before you are even home. In Hanoi the damp weeks of February and March keep curly hair from settling all day.

Smooth is the MONDAY range for frizz-prone hair. Wheat protein holds moisture in the strand and helps keep frizz down, while avocado oil helps form a protective layer. Detangle while the conditioner is still in, not once your hair has dried.

Dry your hair soon after washing, because hair left wet for long in humid air tends to dry more tangled. Before getting on a motorbike, tie it low so the wind does not knot the ends.

Pairing with the shampoo of the same range

MONDAY makes its shampoo and conditioner in pairs: each conditioner has a MONDAY shampoo of the same name. The shampoo looks after the scalp, while the matching conditioner adds coconut oil for the ends. Using the pair is the simple way to get what that range is designed for.

You can also mix ranges. With a scalp that goes greasy and ends that stay dry, wash with Volume and condition the ends with Moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Will conditioner make my hair greasy?

Usually not, if it goes in the right place. Conditioner on the roots and scalp is the most common reason hair turns limp and greasy. Apply it from the mid-lengths down, use a small amount and rinse thoroughly. For fine hair, choose Volume, which MONDAY makes to condition fine hair lightly.

How long should I leave conditioner on?

One to two minutes, as the MONDAY bottle says. Use that time to comb out knots with a wide-tooth comb, then rinse. Some general hair care guides suggest three to five minutes for conditioner, but with MONDAY simply follow what the bottle says.

Do I need conditioner every time I wash?

MONDAY's directions are to use it straight after the shampoo. For dry, curly or long hair, conditioning at every wash makes detangling easier. Short, fine hair can get by with less, on the ends only, so the roots keep their lift.

Does MONDAY conditioner contain silicone?

Yes. Moisture, Smooth and Volume conditioner all contain dimethicone and dimethiconol, two silicones. The formulas are free of SLS, SLES and parabens, and the pH is 5. If you follow a silicone-free routine, this conditioner is not the right choice for you.

Is MONDAY conditioner a hair mask?

No. It is a rinse-out conditioner that stays on for one to two minutes. It is not a mask or a leave-in. The MONDAY products we sell do not include a mask. For very dry hair, use Moisture after every wash.

Can I use a shampoo from one range and a conditioner from another?

Yes. If your hair is fine and slightly wavy, for example, wash with Volume so the roots keep their lift. Then condition the ends with Smooth to cut down on knots. MONDAY designs each pair to go together, but it does not say you must stay within one range.

Can my daughter with long hair use my conditioner?

Better not. MONDAY does not test its products on children or babies, which is why the brand does not recommend them for kids. For a child's long or tangly hair, choose a conditioner made for young children, as MONDAY suggests.

Can I keep conditioner in the bathroom?

Yes, while you are using it, but out of direct sun. The packaging says to store it somewhere dry and cool, away from sunlight and humidity. According to MONDAY, an opened bottle is good for 12 months and an unopened one for 3 years.
