What size tape diaper for a 3 kg newborn?

Size NB, made for babies from 3 to 5 kg. The Rascals chart starts at 3 kg, so the NB convenience pack of 28 is a cheap way to check the fit around the thighs. Once your baby passes 4 kg and the diaper leaves marks, move to size S.

My baby is 9 kg, size S or M?

Size M. Size S stops at 8 kg, while M covers 6 to 11 kg, so a 9 kg baby still has room to grow. Near 10 kg, if the diaper leaks or the tabs stop reaching the hips, compare it with size L.

Can Rascals tape diapers last through the night?

Yes. The pack states up to 12 hours of leak protection, noting that the real time depends on your baby’s urine volume and bladder activity. If your baby still leaks at night after a careful fit, check the size first, since a tight size is a common cause.

How many diapers does a newborn use a day?

Rascals says most newborns need 8 to 10 changes a day, falling to about 4 to 6 for toddlers. At that rate the NB convenience pack of 28 lasts around three days. The NB Super Jumbo box of 240 lasts three to four weeks.

How do I know the tape diaper is too small?

Check the waist and thighs right after a change. Red marks, tabs that no longer reach the hips, or no room for a finger in the waistband mean it is time to size up. More leaks than before, even when fastened well, point the same way.

Do Rascals diapers have fragrance or lotion?

No. Rascals states its diapers are made with 0% lotions, latex and fragrance. The materials are hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested. The brand was founded by a New Zealand mum whose son had eczema, so sensitive skin was its starting point.

Tape diapers for newborns

Four sizes from NB (3 to 5 kg) to L (10 to 15 kg), for the months before your baby starts to roll over.

Tape diapers open out flat and close with two tabs at the hips. You change your baby on the bed without threading little legs through anything. Rascals tape diapers come from New Zealand in four weight-based sizes, from a 3 kg newborn up to about 15 kg.

In the first months a baby wees many times a day, sleeps in long stretches and cannot roll yet. The two worries are a leak at 2 a.m. and red skin in the thigh creases. Below: which size to pick, how to fasten it and when to move on.

Four things to check before you choose

Weight, not age. Sizes go by kilos. Two babies of three months can be a whole size apart.
Between two sizes. The ranges overlap, so a 7 kg baby fits both S and M. Rascals suggests the smaller size first.
The longest sleep. A long night needs a diaper sealed at the back and thighs. How you fasten it matters as much as the size.
Testing or stocking up. Newborns gain weight fast. Test a size with a convenience pack, then buy the box.

Three pack types and which one to buy

Convenience packs hold 20 to 28 diapers in NB, S and M. They suit the first days and fit in the hospital bag. Start with the NB convenience pack of 28.

Regular packs hold 70 in size S, 60 in M and 50 in L. Buy these once the size is clear. The Rascals tape diapers size S, 70 pack suits a baby past 5 kg who has outgrown NB.

Super Jumbo boxes hold three packs of one size. Choose one when your baby will stay in that size for weeks. Size NB comes only this way, as the Super Jumbo NB 3 × 80: 240 diapers.

The first weeks with a newborn

Newborns need changing many times a day, so keep an open pack by the bed and another in the nappy bag. At each change, clean and pat the skin dry before the fresh diaper goes on.

While the umbilical stump is still on, Pharmacity advises folding the top edge of the diaper below the navel. The stump then gets air and is not rubbed. With tape diapers you set that height at every change.

Fastening it snugly to stop night leaks

Rascals says most leaks come from the wrong size or a loose fit. The steps printed on the pack:

Open the diaper and lay your baby on it, with the back of the waistband level with the waist.
Bring the front up between the legs and fasten both tabs at the hips, pulling evenly.
Pull the frills of the leg cuffs outwards. A cuff tucked inwards is where wee usually escapes.
Slide one finger into the waistband. One finger means snug, no finger means too tight.

Leaks up the back usually mean the waistband sat too low. The high-back waistband has up to 12 pieces of elastic, but it only works if you place the diaper high.

Overnight, the four-layer Hydrolock core holds the liquid. A deep pocket and triple leak guards stop wee and runny poo at the edges.

Keeping skin dry when the air is damp

The damp nồm weeks in the north and the rainy season in the south keep skin inside a diaper from drying. The Rascals Fast-Dry Layer traps liquid in seconds. The pack says it helps keep skin dry and limit nappy rash.

The AirSpun top sheet is hot-air bonded, soft and breathable. A fast-drying diaper still needs changing on time. If a red patch does not settle after a few days, ask your paediatrician.

When your baby starts rolling and crawling

From around three months many babies roll, wriggle and kick nonstop. Long Châu notes that tape diapers and pants both work from then on. Rascals suggests switching for good once your baby will not lie still, tugs at the diaper, or outgrows the largest tape size.

You can use both side by side. Rascals diaper pants start at size M (6 to 11 kg), the same band as the size M tape diapers. Pants by day, tape at night, and no change of size.
